I've just used this technique for two cards: A Get Well card & Thankyou card.
CARD BODY
Buy a sheet of coloured cardboard from the newsagent (in Australia, about $1.00). Fold it in half using a sharp crease by sliding/rolling a very smooth object like a pen along the fold. Fold it again into quarters and crease sharply. You now have four thicknesses. Trim the card to your preferred size.
ARTWORK
Draw up two lots of artwork (one for front and one for inside) either by hand or on your computer. The paper size needs to be smaller than the card size. I made mine so 10mm of the cardboard colour was visible all the way around. I incorporated the cardboard colour into my artwork to help tie it all together visually.
ASSEMBLY
Open the folded cardboard out flat and lay on a cutting board. Position the front artwork on what will be the front of the card. Using a utility knife, cut a 5mm slit about 10mm in from each corner of the paper containing your artwork. This slit needs to go through both the paper and the cardboard. Insert a little brass fastener available from newsagents (these are little button-heads with two brass "legs". The legs feed through the slits and are spread on the other side of the cardboard). Do this on each corner and repeat for your inside artwork.
The result is extremely stylish.
All the best with your efforts,
Mark.

Basic steps to make an awesome birthday card out of construction paper:
Take construction paper and glue 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper to it, centered.
(this is the inside of the card)
Decorate inside and compose message.
Decorate outside.
Glue some macaroni to it for the "I really put effort into this" effect.

. Make them colorful
. Write Happy B-day
. Inside, write a letter that will be meaningful to them.. In other words make it nice and sweet.
. To add extra details is always fun.. Like glitter or pop-ups
. Just be creative in your own way.

May you get inspired to make you own video.
Or you can go to an art supply store, buy blank greeting card in a box and use whatever you have like pen, pencil, sharpie, watercolor, collage of photos... Good luck.

Something like this with some words written by you, or maybe even a poem or funny joke, seems like it would be perfect.
You are definitely right in thinking a card you make will be more meaningful than one you buy. My first experience, as an adult, making my own card was a total disaster... I actually spent about $20 in materials for it, and botched it over and over until I had no materials left... it was terrible... I wish I had seen this video back then. It looks pretty simple and stylish.

As an alternative to a traditional paper card, you can make a birthday DVD with most photo software programs. Martha Stewart has some simple instructions for making Mechanical Dog Cards which would add a creative touch for a pet lover:

Personally, my favorite way to make a birthday card is with construction paper, markers, crayons and glue. It may feel tacky doing it, but it's more fun than one would think.

Lots of craft stores offer homemade card kits. They give you everything you need to make a well designed homemade card. Pretty much every craft store has them. They also offer classes on how to make cards. You can also look online for craft blogs. Lots of people make crafts and you can get ideas from that. Also, you can search etsy.com for inspiration. Good luck!
