Is this Birmingham, Alabama? If you don't mind driving about an hour Tuscaloosa has some great places, The University of Alabama Campus (Gorgas home lawn, President's Mansion and the Crimson Promenade). There are also great parks around town with water fountains and lots of riverfront.
