Hi @mccainblogette and welcome to Mahalo.
I think Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz is a great idea and you might want to run with that one. I think it fits your style.
What do you think the ladies from The View will be wearing?

they have a great assortment of costumes.
My suggestion would be something or someone from a recent movie that just came out.

Suggestions: Definitely have gray/white pigtails and makeup to accentuate
WRINKLES. You could carry along a pair of
orthopedic shoes (just in case the old feet can't take the red
slippers anymore). Maybe drag along an OLD stuffed toy
dog (Toto) that looks pretty ratty:) Or maybe carry a bag
marked Medicare and inside have lots of senior items like a
fake AARP card (assuming you need a fake one), a coupon
book marked SENIOR DISCOUNTS, a pair of wax teeth, etc.
Keep it all in fun - just like growing old!

One other suggestion--if you want to get creative--I went as a Fruit Roll-up one year. It was great--I just got a big piece of red fabric from JoAnn Fabric, then used waxed paper on the back (like the plastic wrapper) and wore all red. In retrospect, I might have chosen a different color--all night long people thought I was the devil. But it was a pretty good costume, if I do say so myself.

i would suggest looking through some halloween costumes and make your decision after seeing them all. Narrow down to 5 and rate 1-10 Pick the one that best screams happy halloween =) Check out http://www.shoptimesaver.com/Clothing/store81-Star-Costumes/40/1.html

Dorothy is a great costume, especially since this is the 75th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz! But why not make your Dorothy extra special??? Play up the 75th anniversary by making Dorothy 70ish or maybe 80ish! Suggestions: Definitely have gray/white pigtails and makeup to accentuate
WRINKLES. You could carry along a pair of

If you do go as Dorothy, the BEST way to make ruby slippers is to use rubber cement on an old pair of shoes and coat liberally with red glitter. The rubber cement will let the shoes give a little without the glitter flaking off. One other suggestion--if you want to get creative--I went as a Fruit Roll-up one year. It was great--I just got a big piece of red fabric from JoAnn Fabric, then used waxed paper on the back (like the plastic wrapper) and wore all red.
