You are looking for the Kinetoscope, or the Phenakistiscope. The Kinetoscope existed in both a cylindrical version, and in a tape-like version (for longer footage).

Does anyone know what object makes a motion pictures when you spin it?
The object is circular with a base to hold the cylindrical top up.
The inner lining is filled with images or drawings.
When you spin the cylindrical item it creates motion in the images on the inside.
Some companies make them and put a light in the middle to project the moving image on a wall.
