The key is multiple income streams. Often setting them up in this order.
1) Have a donation button
2) Sell Advertising Space (starting here it helps to be popular)
3) Sell stuff branded with your characters
4) Conventions
5) Sell a book
Because of the circles I hang out in* I know quite a few webcomic artists and writers fairly well, most make enough to get a nice meal at the end of the month, some make enough to make a car payment at the end of a month. Very few make a living at it.
If you do it for the love of the comic you may get lucky enough to fall into that last category, but plan on putting a year or two in the first . . .

Another idea, borrowing this one from Leo Laporte's TWiT network, is to have a $2 monthly subscription button. $2 from each reader with a decent audience would be some solid income.

In addition to what cheapgamer said, I would advise to not go to heavy on any advertising before you have an audience. Ditto prices for swag and books: keep it low, build interest. Another idea, borrowing this one from Leo Laporte's TWiT network, is to have a $2 monthly subscription button. $2 from each reader with a decent audience would be some solid income.
