The only thing that would even come close would be to have a rather large roll in a play, or to direct one, where method acting is used, and the sets are fabulous. This would force you to get into the heads of the various characters and learn their world and the setting of the play.

But you wouldn't be able to do quite everything: skydive, or explore underwater in a submersible, or any of the things that would require special effects. The settings a person's mind can come up with are only lately beginning to be matched in special effects!

That, or you can play with a bunch of boys and giant jellybeans.

When it is a really well written book, nothing can come close to being able to take you away into another time/place/world. Spent many a night reading far too late into the morning when a book has taken me away like that. No movie or anything else can do that.

I don't really think so. Books hold much more information, and that information is retained more than if you were to watch a TV show. The only thing that comes close for me is a really really good video game.
