"The story about the painter Vincent van Gogh cutting off part of an ear is a critical part of his "brilliant but mad" image. But two art historians are presenting a case for it having been Gauguin, who was staying with Van Gogh at the time, having done it. According to The Guardian:
"...two German art historians, who have spent 10 years reviewing the police investigations, witness accounts and the artists' letters, argue that Gauguin, a fencing ace, most likely sliced off the ear with his sword during a fight, and the two artists agreed to hush up the truth." "

THANKS
"Van Gogh suffered a severe setback in December 1889. It is generally acknowledged that he cut off the lobe of his left ear during a seizure on 24 December 1888. He had been troubled by mental health issues throughout his life, and particularly during the last few years of his life. In some of these later periods, he chose not to paint or was not allowed to. There has been much debate over the years as to the source of Van Gogh's illness and its effect on his work. Over 150 psychiatrists have attempted to label its root, and some 30 different diagnoses have been suggested.112 Diagnoses that have been put forward include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, syphilis, poisoning from swallowed paints, temporal lobe epilepsy and acute intermittent porphyria. Any of these could have been the culprit and been aggravated by malnutrition, overwork, insomnia and a fondness for alcohol and absinthe in particular.113 114"

Van Gogh was suffering from several mental illnesses. He was bipolar; he had multiple moods. The reason why he amputated his ear, was due to the fact that his ear lobe suffered a temporal lobe epilepsy on December 24, 1888. The cause was his use of absinthe, a highly alcoholic beverage. He couldn't deal with the pain and cut the ear off.

- Fact Refuted
The temporal lobe is part of the brain and is not related to the ear lobe. There is no such thing as having a seizure localized in the ear, or epilepsy of the ear. Van Gogh did have seizures and it is generally reported that he cut off his ear lobe during a seizure, but the seizure wasn't IN his ear.

According to Wikipedia, there are many theories, including seizures, paint poison, and others, IMHO, ABSINTHE, easy answer. He drank basically what is high alcohol proof plus hallucinogenic poison. I would NOT recommend it. Also apparently his life was pretty tough. He never made any money or had any fame while alive. But upon death he grew quite huge in the art world. THANKS
