You could always go to Metropolitan Museum Site which I've found to be VERY helpful in my own Art History 1 and 2 classes with visuals, audio, maps, background info, and essays on their wonderful art pieces... or you could vistit the getty who has great books in its giftshop you could purchase.

In general you can learn a lot by visiting museum websites and their collections section. Some offer podcasts and microsites for ongoing exhibits. Here are a few:

If the class has listed a book that is a good reference to start with because there is not just one art history book. there are several depending on which century you are studing. I know for myself I have a bookshelf full of just art history books because there are so many to chose from. There is contemporary, women in art, world art, I mean the list goes on and on. The other good resourse is the library college and or public. hope this helps

The Metropolitan Museum of Art probably has one of the best art sites with a timeline: http://www.metmuseum.org/toah In general you can learn a lot by visiting museum websites and their collections section. Some offer podcasts and microsites for ongoing exhibits. Here are a few:

As mentioned previously there is no one book to use as a source. One thing for sure is that the "art world" does have its own language. The best online source that may help familiarize yourself with Art is http://artlex.com/. This has been a life saver (ok a grade saver) it is quick and easy to use. Best of luck
