Are you an organ donor? Why or why not?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I am an organ donor as well. For me the reason for being a donor is more a question of, why not? Regardless of your beliefs of where you go after you die, you will not need your organs. Even the Egyptians who preserved their dead believing they will need their bodies in the after life took out the organs. With surgeries as none invasive as they are today, although it may not be as none invasive as on a live person, removing your organs does not mean greusomely hacking you up and returning a skeleton with some skin. If you're worried about aesthetics all of the organs that are usable are in your abdomen so a shirt will cover the incisions in an open casket. Really ... what do you have to lose in donating your organs. All of them may not go to people who need them, some may go to be studied but ultimately those studies end up saving more lives than your one kidney ever could. Becoming an organ donor is saving maybe one or two lives, maybe many lives with absolutely no effort on your behalf. Is there anything better you could ask for after your gone?

I was, until ironically I was informed I could no longer give blood or donate my organs. The reason is highly amusing...

I lived outside the US.

Reasons for permanent deferral from donation:

"# Persons who have spent more than 3 months in the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands or Isle of Man, Gibraltar, or the Falkland Islands) from 1980 through 1996, or who have received beef insulin since 1980
# Since 1980, persons who have spent 5 or more years in Europe, including time spent in the U.K., and individuals who have spent 6 months or more associated with military bases in Europe from 1980 through 1996 "

http://www.cbccts.org/donating/index.htm

However googling just now organ donation for a source I think the lady at the DMV lied to me, it doesn't say I can't donate my organs, just my blood...

I'll have to look into that more before I get around to getting my license changed to my married name lol

Long answer short, No I am not an organ donor. They didn't want my dead bits to my understanding. Previously, yes, not like I need them after I'm dead.

Yes I am!

I only have one organ that they can not have. That happens to be my eyes.

I believe that if I pass on while my organs are still in good health,I should help as many people who really need it as possible. I told my hubby that if I pass away from an accident or while I am young enough to please let me live on by giving life to others. It will also be a lesson for my children,They will learn the value of life and see you can help people even after you are gone.

Absolutely. Have been since I got my driver's license - we have the notification box on the license, very handy.

Why? Because if someone lives by using something I don't need anymore, then I'm doing a good thing, a final act of kindness you might say.

I need no other reason than saving a life :)

Well I wasnt... until someone asked me if I'd ever accept an organ if I needed a transplant. Suddenly I realised that If I would accept one then I really should be a donor as well. There's a big problem with the shortage of organs that people really need. And we'll all benefit if there are more donors.
