You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors
•Using a selective serontin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) is a choice for patients who have chronic anxiety and stress in addition to mood symptoms. Prescription SSRIs are taken daily for long-term treatment (at least a year) of anxiety. Prozac and Zoloft are examples of SSRI antidepressants.
Other Antidepressants
•Using other antidepressants, including the tricyclics and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, can be another way to treat anxiety and stress. Options include the older antidepressants such as Anafranil or newer antidepressants such as Cymbalta, Wellbutrin and Effexor. These medications are taken on a daily basis.
Benzodiazepines
•Using a benzodiazepine is particularly helpful for acute anxiety that is brought on by stress. Benzodiazepines can be taken daily or on an as needed basis. Benzodiazepines can become addictive if abused. Xanax, Valium and Ativan are all benzodiazepines used for anxiety and stress.
Other Anxiolytics
•Using BuSpar as an anti-anxiety is preferred for use in children or in adults with history of addiction because of it's non-habit forming properties. Benadryl is an over-the-counter medication that is used for anxiety and stress in children on inpatient hospital units.
Antipsychotic Medication
•Using an antipsychotic medication to calm symptoms of anxiety and stress is also helpful. Well known and commonly used antipsychotics include Risperdal, Zyprexa or Abilify. These medications can be taken alone or in combination with antidepressants or mood stabilizers.

There are tons of herbal and natural remedies for stress, here is a list of different OTC solutions and choices, i have tried all of them and have posted my thoughts of each.

Bachs Rescue Remedy
This is a mix of flowers and other herbs, it does seem to take edge off for stress, but is not a viable option for extreme anxiety.

Doxylamine Succinate
(this is generally known as sominex a sleep aid) this has been used off label for anxiety or stress when tranquilizers are contraindicated. (generally 1/4 of a dose for sleep will do the trick without causing drowsiness)

Diphenhydramine HCI
(benadryl) also used off label for anti anxiety, was actually found to have a similar action to antidepressants, and in the 1960's was one of the first medications that led to the research of other antidepressant drugs. (if used for anxiety or stress .25mg works without causing drowsiness)

Valerian Root
Can be purchased at most herbal/health food stores, this stuff smells really bad, but it definately takes the edge off, however, in my experience it only worked for a short time, after awhile your body becomes used to it and it wont work as well.

5HTP
5-hydroxytryptophan is a precursor to melatonin serotonin and tryptophan, it helps the body to produce melatonin serotonin and tryptophan, you have probably heard of turkey making you tired, thats because it contains tryptophan. (do not take this if you are on an antidepressant)

Sun-Theanine
Also known as Theanine, or L-Theanine it is an amino acid that is proven to reduce mental and physical stress, and improves cognition and mood in a synergistic manner with caffeine.

GABA
Gaba (gamma-aminobutric acid) is the chemical that is effected when a tranquilizer or a benzodiazepine is taken. It can be purchased at most GNC or health food stores, it cannot pass the blood brain barrier so its efficacy is questionable however i have used it and found that it does seem to help reduce stress.

St. John's Wort
is an herbal antidepressant, some people have found that it works wonders, i did not have any response to it however.

I hope this information helps! This is everything I have learned after years of struggling with anxiety and panic attacks.
