Are there any medical plans that offer compensation or discounts for people purchasing running or exercise shoes?

I'm considered medically obese and need to exercise, so would I qualify for some sort of special discount? Will medicare or medicaid pay for my running or exercise equipment if it is medically necessary?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi @12keylime,

I haven't come up with this idea so this question is great. So I looked online for medical plans that offer discounts on medical shoes and I have found Medicare. It says it will cover one pair of therapeutic shoes (for diabetes patients) and inserts if you need them. So in order for you to qualify, you should meet the requirements as discussed in http://www.medicare.com/equipment-and-supplies/diabetic-shoes.html. Just read the whole article as it offers important information.
There are also other medical plans that cover therapeutic shoes like from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (https://www.bcbsri.com/BCBSRIWeb/plansandservices/index.jsp) and from Cigna (http://www.cigna.com/customer_care/healthcare_professional/coverage_positions/medical/mm_0150_coveragepositioncriteria_foot_ankle_knee_orthotics.pdf). So if your medical plan is not one of them then you can inquire from your health insurance company.

Personally, I have a strong feeling that any medical plan can cover anything that’s included in the doctor’s prescription.
