Are there any good brands of low salt cheese?

Is it possible to make homemade Macaroni and Cheese using a low salt cheese? If you use low sodium cheese, which brand do you recommend for taste? What are food are of quality that are made with this type of cheese? I am getting so hungry for cheese but I cannot find a low sodium version that tastes good.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You are right, lowering salt intake is a key element to getting healthier. 2,400 mg per day is the recommended salt intake. According to studies North Americans eat about 10,000 mg daily, primarily due to the salt in prepackaged foods. If we prepare foods at home and have more control over the salt and other ingredients in the recipe, we can be healthier.

Low salt cheeses can be great as ingredients in recipes like macaroni and cheese or other cheese dishes. DrGourmet is a great website that has a number of low sodium recipes for you to try, including the one you mentioned in your question - mac'n'cheese. The recipe calls for reduced fat cheddar cheese, but I'm sure you could substitute for another low salt brand.

Good luck!

Yes it is possible to make homemade Macaroni and Cheese using a low salt cheese, due to the fact that there are a wide range of dairy products being marketed today with fewer sodium content to answer the call of health professionals for a much lower levels of sodium on most products to prevent or reduce the risks of individuals in developing heart disease.

With regards to a particular brand of cheese, I suggest you either use Hoop Cheese or Farmer Cheese, since these cheese have a much lower salt content of just 10 mg. You may also try other cheese brands such as Black Diamond LS Cheddar and Heluva Good, with sodium content of 15 mg and 5 mg respectively.
