Are the costs to set up and run a charity event tax deductible?

I'm organizing a charity event for Child's Play Charity, however I'm not an official agent of the charity. Donations will be handled through people using PayPal to send money directly to Child's Play, so I'm never in the middle of it. I'm curious as to whether I can deduct my expenses in organizing and running the event from my taxes.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

"To be deductible, charitable contributions must be made to qualified organizations. See Publication 526, Charitable Contributions.

If your contribution entitles you to merchandise, goods, or services, including admission to a charity ball, banquet, theatrical performance, or sporting event, you can deduct only the amount that exceeds the fair market value of the benefit received. For a contribution of cash, check, or other monetary gift (regardless of amount), you must maintain as a record of the contribution either a bank record or a written communication from the qualified organization containing the date and amount of the contribution and the name of the organization. You generally can deduct the fair market value of any property you donate, as well as your cash contributions, to qualified organizations."

My friend works at the IRS and this is their exact stance on the matter. I'm including the link to this section so that you can further research the specifics, which are a bit too detailed to elaborate upon here.

Good luck running your event!

It's best to donate that money to the charitable organization, as long as they have the proper 501(c)3 certificate and can issue a receipt for the donation. Without being an agent of the organization you will not be able to claim your expenses as tax deductible. If you are doing the organizing and paying for the event you can set up your own charitable organization and co sponsor the event and everything will be all covered legally.

If you try to one line it on a 1040 it might come under scrutiny. Even with your good intentions, it's best to make sure your bases are covered.
