Are Tahitian pearls always black in color?

Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Tahitian pearls are black pearls that are grown in the waters of French Polynesia. Although they are commonly referred to as black pearls, Tahitian pearls are found in a large variety of natural colors such as silvery white, light and dark grays, greens, blues, yellows, and purples. They range in size from about 7mm to over 18mm.

Tahitian pearls are black to silver in color. Pearls come in many colors, including creamy white to yellow South Sea pearls and pink to lavender freshwater pearls.

The color description of Tahitian Pearls is listed as: black to dark grey with some blue, green and/or purple overtones.

So, while they are often referred to as "black," individual pearls can range from metallic silver colored to dark graphite with various overtones to even goldish colors. And because of their metallic nature, the colors can seem to change depending on the lighting or angle involved.

As you can see from this photo, the color spectrum of Tahitian pearls can vary greatly:
