Quail are thought to have been domesticated in 12th century Japan. That's over 800 years ago. Even so, chickens were domesticated much earlier.

There are different kinds of quail, you may be thinking of another species or perhaps another breed.

Quail are certainly subject to assorted diseases. One is even named for them.

Tennessee Red Quail, a variety of Bob White quail, were bred for disease resistance.
