Are phobias really a health issue, or just a state of mind?

I am wondering whether phobias can actually be a mental health issue, or are they simply something that we can overcome. Are they a state of mind, or something that can be treated with medication?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I believe that many people have certain phobias to things, animals, activities, situations or people. I myself must admit that I have phobias on any kind of worm esp. earthworms and leeches and on heights. I had tried overcoming my phobia before but it’s just that I cannot. So what I do is I just pretend that they’re not scary but don’t just ask me to touch them or I’ll be running away as fast as I could, lol. When I’m also shopping in big malls that have escalators almost reaching to 90° haha I just think so, I manage my phobia of heights by avoiding looking below (esp. when descending) esp. if I were on 4th to up floor. There is that feeling that something is going to get or pull me but I can manage it so I don’t consider it a big issue on my health.

Actually, there are ways to overcome phobias. I personally haven’t tried consulting a psychiatrist because I think I am in full control of myself yet and I believe I still can live my life to the fullest without having to like and love all things. And since this is a disorder, I believe that if one’s daily activities have been interfered already by his phobias then I think he should seek professional help. I don’t agree much on medications as I think they only provide temporary relief, it should be professional’s guidance and help that should be of great help in eliminating those abnormal fears. Please note though that there are certain phobias that are non-psychological like those caused by physical ailments i.e. photophobia. Phobia is commonly known in as an anxiety disorder often experienced by individual in a particular situation whether to a particular object or situation. It maybe experienced by the person in much longer duration and may hinder one's ability to deal with daily experiences at work and also with usual gatherings.

Phobia range from fear of insects, animals, height and a lot more. It has been noted that majority of these anxiety disorders do not require medical attention, but if such condition interferes with your normal routine, there are existing treatments that can be undertaken to eliminate your phobias.

Accordingly, "if anxiety affects your ability to function at work or socially, consider seeking medical or psychological treatment. Most people can be helped with the right therapy."
