Are Facebook games like Farmville and Mafia Wars a Scam?

Tip for best answer: M$1.50
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

As admitted by its developer Facebook games like Farmville and Mafia Wars is truly a scam, in diabolical proportions. It is designed to be addictive, by making the players waste time and download useless apps.

-quote-

"Facebook games like Farmville and Mafia Wars carry a rep for being diabolically addictive, but who knew they were just downright diabolical? Apparently, the productivity-whacking timewasters were birthed in a hive of scam and villainy. Straight from the horse’s mouth:

“I knew that I wanted to control my destiny, so I knew I needed revenues, right, f***ing, now. Like I needed revenues now. I funded the company myself but I did every horrible thing in the book to, just to get revenues right away," said Zynga CEO Mark Pincus. "I mean we gave our users poker chips if they downloaded this zwinky toolbar which was like, I don’t know, I downloaded it once and couldn't get rid of it.”

Basically, yes. Mafia wars is just a game, I play it, and I have never been scammed. I am also very successful in the game, and I have never spent any money on it. But they do present the opportunity to get scammed. They build the game to feed on our desire to build and collect things, and then give you a chance to build and collect more by taking part in 3rd party deals which can be very deceptive (signing you up for reoccurring charges and not spelling it out clearing that that is what you doing) and thats the scam part of it. I think Xynga (the maker of alot of these games) needs to distance themselves from these people and figure out a more direct way to make money off their games.

Games are games. There is nothing to be scammed about in playing them. You like them enough to play, or you don't.

What are indeed scams are the special offers to get special points etc that are listed by these companies, especially Zynga. These listings are scams to various degrees, sometimes serious ones.

But, you don't have to look at or click on those offers to play the games. The games themselves are not scams.

Also, most of the companies designing games are not as unscrupulous as Zynga. I recommend Farm Town instead of Zynga's FarmVille and Restaurant City instead of Zynga's Cafe World game if you are worried about scams. However, Zynga has been using its ill-gotten profits to hire programmers to keep improving their games.

IMHO, Zynga's games don't fit the classic definition of a scam. They do deliver their service as advertised--the games are free to play and more or less functional. (I say 'or less' because of the frequent server updates.) If you just presume that any game items that cost Farmbucks or Fishbucks or Mobbucks or whatever are off-limits, the games are safe enough to play.

However, I find their reliance on marketing lead generation for revenue to be irresponsible at best, and (as shown by the Consumerist clip) completely unethical at worst.

I blocked all my games a few days ago because I felt too addicted to them, but the news being posted here about Zynga's business practices gives me another reason not to support them.

I got sucked into Farmville and after reaching level 30 I thought I would buy some Farm Cash. I love the games, but after using my credit card to buy some farm cash, but after I recieved my cash and paid for it, every fortnight after; 2.50 AUD would come out of my account and sent to Zynga. I changed my credit card and didn't feel like going through the 4 pages of paperwork to get the 5.00 I lost before I realised what was happening.

So play the games, just be wary of using a credit card to buy the extras :).

(Even after being taken advantage of, I still play the games as they're quite fun imo)
