Stress coat. That is the best thing you can do at this point. It will help make the water better, replace the protective coating that was likely removed when your fish was pulled out and it will help the scales regrow.

Most any aquarium or pet store should carry it.
Betas commonly hover at the top of the tank. Eating/showing interest in food is good. But it sounds like he is pretty beat up. The biggest worry right now is likely infection.
Just don't bother him. The worst thing you can do is keep looking at him and checking to see if he is alive. If he lives he lives, constantly tapping on glass etc. will just cause more stress.
Keep the temperature constant and around 80 degrees. Big temp swings overnight can cause a lot of stress.
Bad signs would include swimming in a non vertical orientation (upside down or sideways). Swimming backwards isn't that big of a deal.
I hope he makes it!

Will my betta fish survive?
So the new male betta fish we got the day after Christmas got himself stuck in his little ornamental castle. He was clearly stuck - any attempt to jostle the castle and his little head whipped back and forth a mile a minute like he wanted to swim but couldn't. I have no idea how long he was like that (less than 8 hours, though), and basically I had to tug him out with pliers. Lots of scales scraped off his back. He's still moving, still at the top of the tank, but not moving too much - mostly backwards. Looks like he's making at least an attempt to get food, which is there.
How resilient are these things? Is he basically a goner? Anything I can do to help his recovery, stuff to add to the water to help the scales, etc? Behaviors I could look for that would indicate good/bad health?

• I went right out and got the recommended stuff - although they only had "Betta Fix", not "Stress Coat", though it appears to be the same thing. Fish seems to be doing well, swimmingly actively around the whole tank.

Excellent. At least I know now that my sister is a fish-killer.

There are 28 known species of betta. The type species is B. picta, the spotted betta.[1] By far the best known Betta species, however, is B. splendens, the Siamese fighting fish."To find some more enlightened information,be kind enough to check out the links below.Happy holidays.
