As far as the fish go, they don't care either way. Keeping real plants can be a very rewarding experience. However, if they keep dying, it can also be infuriating!

Do you have a fluorescent bulb? If so, then there's no reason that you shouldn't try your hand with a few plants. Most plants will quickly overgrow such a small tank, so try plants like banana plants, moss balls, or anubias.

Your fishes' waste should produce adequate fertilizer, but you can also pick up some trace elements (phosphorous etc) for plants (macros and micros), but only use a teensy bit.

I would recommend some of each. The fake plants will be easier to manage, but it would be better for the fish to have real plants.

It depends on whether you already have a system in place to make sure there is oxygen in the tank for the fish to breath (if they breath underwater). If you don't, you might want to go with real plants because they will produce some of the oxygen that the fish will need to breath. Otherwise, I think that the placement would be at your discretion.

I would recommend the fake plants. They never die! I have always used the fake plants, they make some really neat one.

I have a 55 gallon tropical fish aquarium that I've had for about 4 years now, and I use only fake plants. The live plants never seem to last. I've tried them a few times, but they always start to die and the fish pick at them. So I just stick with the fake plants and have had no problems. If you're worried about oxygen, don't be. The water is oxygenated through the filter. As long as you have a good filter for your tank that provides a lot of movement in the water, your fish will have plenty of oxygen.
