Fresh water is definately easier. Buy a plecostomus fish and your jamming. My husband has salt water tank which he stomps around and curses about all the time. It requires adding salt and maintaining chemicals and cost alot of money if you srew something up.

Fresh water is much easier to set up and maintain as well as a lot less expensive. If this is your first tank, I would definitely go with fresh water.
