Your crab is probably molting. This process takes up to a week, and will be prolonged if they don't have enough humidity. Make sure he is protected from other crabs and mist the cage with distilled water a few times a day. Give him several shells of various sizes and shapes to choose from. One day you will find something that looks very like a dead crab in the cage, which will be his shed exoskeleton. You may not see him in his new shell right away. Because his new shell will be bigger he'll be able to curl way up in the back of it where you can't see him. The first time this happened to one of my crabs I thought he died and had a little funeral for his molt, only to find him walking around in a new shell a few days later!

Give him lots of different types of shells in various sizes. In general, they like shells with roundish holes, but sometimes like shells with more of a slot opening. Moon shells are popular with the hermit crab crowd. They are very picky about fit and type. Keep an eye on him, though because they get stressed when they are naked for too long.

Try to give him a Strombus shell, it seems that these shells are irresistible. another god option is to spread all kinds of shells and let him to choose.
