Well, obviously, the main downside against the iPod Touch is that you can't make calls or text message using it. Otherwise, it is a great device. You can still use Apps, wi-fi, and all that jazz. I actually own both the touch and the iPhone, at the moment. I had a touch first, and I loved it so much I *had* to get an iPhone. The only upside to not owning an iPhone, for me personally, would be not having to deal with the sucky AT&T service. I'll be ecstatic when Verizon starts offering the iPhone.

Technically, yes. There are programs that allow you to do this, but it won't be exactly the same as texting through the iPhone. You can also IM people on the ipod touch with things like the AIM app. You can send text messages to friends through it, as well.
