I am happy so far with the update running on pretty modest hardware (yep, I still have a G4).
One thing I noticed is that even when I have the remote DJ setting set to ask for a password before voting on a song I was not prompted to do so. This might be because I was using my iphone that I sync with that library, but I still think this is an oversight. The next time someone with an iphone or ipod touch is around I will be sure to test my theory.
One of the best improvements I have noticed is in the itunes store. It loads much faster now both initially and for each category. On the other hand clicking on Applications (in the sidebar, not in the store) still loads abysmally slow considering all it has to do is render a bunch of icons (44 in my case).
Bottom line: a nice improvement overall, but there is still a ways to go.

I always update my iTunes and I love the update as they always bring something even newer. The new one however I think brings not an exceptionally large amount of updates except for the Genius update and for the 3rd gen. iPod Shuffle (to which I think is the best Shuffle to date, even though I hate shuffles) - and to which does not apply to me!
I think that the idea of having one of their aims of the new update in changing the Party Shuffle to DJ was stupid and completely unnecessary. It could be done, however fuss does not need to be made for it. Promotion was even done.
HOWEVER everyone must be glad of the new performance of iTunes 8.1.2 as it is far faster than previous versions. Something that you and I'd say everyone else has been desperate for!

Has everyone downloaded the new iTunes 8.1 update? What do you think of it?
The new features are:
-Genius Sidebar is now available for TV shows and movies, not just songs.
-Support for the new iPod shuffle 3rd gen (which I think is a very bad piece of equipment, but...)
-Party Shuffle has been renamed "DJ" for no apparent reason.
-New feature for the aforementioned function: if you have multiple people at your house (i.e. at a party) with iPod touches or iPhones, they can vote on which song to play next using Remote. (Yes, you security nuts can password-protect this.)
-Parental controls have been upgraded - you can now block access to the Store entirely, leaving only iTunesU.
-Performance improvements (FINALLY!) particularly when importing CDs, downloading Store songs, browsing the Store, working with large libraries, preparing to sync your iPod/iPhone, and syncing photos.
-Accessibility improvements (I have no idea exactly what they are).
-Security improvements.
-The default CD rip settings have been changed from 128kbps AAC to 256kpbs AAC (same as iTunes Plus) for no apparent reason.
All in all, a good update. Apple has finally realized the scope of its iBloat.
