Also they have developed a framework for something called GPGPU, general processing graphics processing unit. A graphics card, a GPU, is really good at splitting data into tiny little chunks and sending the data through its proccessors very quickly, this is often used in things like games to make them run very smoothly.
However, GPU's never really did anything for doing normal everyday ("general processing") tasks like checking email, web browsing, video editing, it was mostly used in games. However in snow leopard, this is not the case, snow leopard will utilize your gpu and make everything much faster.
Apple has also taken the liberty to simply rewrite all of the code for the programs and finder so they take up less space.
Think of snow leopard as less of a release for new applications or eye candy, but more of blazing fast speed improvements, more overall effeciency, in less hard drive space.

M$Snow Leopard(10.6) aims to refine the usability, reliability, and experience of the user by creating a more advanced, cleaner operating system. This upgrade does boast:
- A better 'Finder' by including 64-bit support and Grand Central Dispatch, which optimizes your multi-core system
- Optimized graphics processing through new OpenCL technology
- Less memory usage which means your computer will free about 7GB upon installation
- Faster response time in opening files, waking and sleeping the computer, and overall computer usage
- Built in support for Microsoft Exchange
- Many others
While these updates may or may not tickle your interest, a key benefit of upgrading is that later updates/builds will be based the most current build, which will be, at this time, Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. And compared to the prices of the previous upgrades, the $29 ($9.95 for those who recently purchased Apple computers) isn't too bad.
