I have the same problem, often, and I've traced it to being dehydrated. You could try drinking more water during the day that and see if it helps.
Also, I you sit at a desk all day, which tends to make my cramping worse irf I don't stretch. Doing some stretching in the morning, at work, and in the evening may also help.
Mayo Clinic has an excellent writeup on leg cramps and when to see a doctor. Here's some common causes of leg cramps and some treatments.

M$"A glass of lukewarm milk before going to bed is a simple, yet effective way to treat the leg cramps.
Prepare chamomile tea and have it at least 5 times a day, for about 2 weeks. For every cup of water, take two or three teaspoons of chamomile flower. Bring the water to a boil and let the flower steep in it for a few minutes. Strain, add sugar or honey, and drink warm.
A hot shower before going to bed is effective in curing leg cramps. Pour some hot water on the painful area as well.
While you are on bed, stretch the legs as far as you can and keep it in the same position for half an hour. While standing, push your heel onto the floor and bend your toes upwards. This is a good way to treat leg cramps.
For people who often face the problem of leg cramps, press your toes against the wall and stretch the calf muscles. Repeat this 15-20 times.
A cup of red raspberry leaf tea, consumed in the morning and evening, is good for relieving a person suffering from leg cramps. Bring a cup of water to a boil and add a tsp red raspberry tea to it. Let it steep for a few minutes, strain and drink when still warm.
Mix one tbsp of calcium lactate, one tsp of apple cider vinegar and one tsp of honey in half a glass of lukewarm water. Have this once a day. It will be helpful in treating leg cramps.
Using hot water bottle on the affected area is also beneficial in treating and curing cramps.
Consume 2-3 bananas per day, as it increases the potassium intake in the body, thereby relieving a person from cramps.
Having 2 tsp of honey per day is helpful in preventing leg cramps.
Increase the intake of foods rich in calcium, potassium and magnesium daily.
Massaging the affected area with essential oils, like lavender oil and rosemary oil and eucalyptus oil. After massaging, wrap the affected area with a towel dipped in hot water." http://www.iloveindia.com/home-remedies/leg-cramps.html

M$1) Electrolyte imbalance- often considered a defiency specifically of potassium or sodium. You could try a sports drink each night before bed.
2) Heavy Exercise (your legs are saying this is too much)
3) dehydration (again a sports drink may help, they are available now in carb (sugar) free even and are zero calories if that is a concern)
4) Low iron (anemia) When my iron is low I get these frequently and they go away as soon as I take my iron for a couple of days, you can get iron supplements over the counter, or ask your doctor for some blood work which check the iron as well as the electrolyte.
5) pregnancy- these are seen more frequent in pregnant women, could be again low iron, electrolyte imbalance, or the stress of carrying extra weight etc.)
6) obesity- some studies show that these cramps are more prevalent in obese people.

This can be caused by many reasons. Lack of sleep, dehydration, muscle strain.
Try taking a walk about 2 hours before bedtime, relax. Be sure you have a good pillow, comfy blankets and good matress.
If you doctor did not help, get a new one, if you can.
I've found my truly best doctors by asking the nurses at the hospital.
Go to your largest, best, local hospital.
Ask the receptionist where patients with your condition are treated. Go to that area’s nurse's station and chat with them. Ask for someone who is well schooled, explains things well to patients, has good medical skills.
This book is excellent, also “How to talk to your doctor”. http://www.aarp.org/health/staying_healthy/prevention/a2003-03-13-talkdr.html
