I have a wireless D-link router WBR-2310 can;t get enough signal to the computer downstairs, will a gain antenna work?

Yes, it should work. Provided the antenna should be able to catch the network signal. Just confirm with the vendor before you go for a gain network.

I would also place the router in a central point in the house
-See if you can increase the transmission power.
- adjust the antenna on the client if it has an external antenna.
-Check if the router has the auto mode for channel interference. or manually change to a channel which has the best signal quality. Pls note that these operate on the same spectrum as the MW oven or 2.4GHz phone systems.
