It seems to me that the "Popcorn Sutton" nickname would have been derived from Marvin Sutton's reputation for distilling corn whiskey.(1)

However I have found this quote attributed to Popcorn himself,

~quote
“Years ago in a barroom I busted a popcorn machine, and had to pay for it. Since then, that's what they call me. It's on my car titles and everything.”

Adding to the credibility of my second source, earlier I posted a comment to a blog written by Sky Sutton, Popcorns daughter.

I simply asked her "Where did the name 'Popcorn' come from?"

I just received a reply.

Popcorn got his nickname from breaking a popcorn machine in a bar. Or so they say.;)
