DragonBall Z, the series, was one of the early anime series that was a hit in the US, not many kids had ever seen anything like it before, and the idea of people flying through the air fighting one another was really appealing to them (and still is for the new comers). I wouldn't say it's a huge phenomena by mainstream's standards, but in terms of US success among anime fans, I'd say yes.
