The binary system was used prior to the base 10 system in Eygpt. Also a system of tally marks, where each 'mark' stood for '1' existed before either of those (kind of a base 1 system). Thus /// equals 3 in that system.

Because we have 10 fingers, did all cultures come up with number systems based on ten?
Finger Eleven? Maybe 20 for fingers and toes? I mean, is 10 the number of destiny when it comes to mathematics?

We still use tally, are you sure they didn;t group them like we do? I mean 4 and then a cross hatch?
My math book from college says that the tally system used before binary or base 10 did not have a cross hatch.
But I think it this link says the same as my textbook. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numeral_system
In all honesty, I did not have a source as I was just recalling what I learned while getting my degree in Math. I apologize for the confusion and the short answer.
