It depends what you want to go there for.
For the best experience and taking in atmosphere you want to go during one of the holidays - Christmas & Halloween especially.
If you want to avoid crowds though, you want to avoid these peak times and general school holiday times.
From my experience, we've found a couple of weeks before Halloween to be very good - usually all the decorations are up and celebrations are happening, but you miss the crowds.
Easter is another good time to go as it doesn't get too busy, if you pick the dates right.
An extra tip - to avoid the crowds during the busy times, try going to the park early in the morning.

What is the best time of year to visit Disneyland?
I'm trying to plan a trip to Disneyland, but I'm not sure what time is the best time of year to visit. I know there are different shows/events/themes during different times of the year, so which is best!?

The best time is the week before Thanksgiving. You will be able to see all of the Christmas decorations and it won't be a crowded. The parade starts November 21, 2008 through January 4, 2009 http://www.wdwinfo.com/Disneyland/images/mickey-xmas.jpg

Going the month before Halloween or Christmas is a special time to go to Disneyland because of the beautiful decorations they have up (and the Haunted Mansion ride is turned into The Nightmare Before Christmas), however, that is also a very crowded time to go. The best time to go for no crowds is a Tuesday or Wednesday in January or February, preferably not on a week with a holiday (such as President's Day) and also on a drizzly day. Then you'll be able to walk on to any ride, as well as enjoy the park as it is most year-round, which is great!

In the research I have done, I think the best times are the last two weeks of September are less crowed since most schools have just started and as stated before, the week before Thanksgiving week is uncrowded also. I use this book as my planning guide. http://www.passporter.com/ and the WDW Radio show podcast. http://www.wdwradio.com/
