Tell me what to see/do while I am at Disneyland on Christmas Day.

My parents are coming into town and we are going to be visiting Disneyland (in California) on Christmas Day.

I am not sure what to see or do, but I hear there are a lot of neat things that go on--I don't want to miss any of them! Specifically, I would like to know which shows/parades to see and which restaurants to eat at.

Also, I heard along the grapevine that Small World had been closed for a time, but has now re-opened--is there something new worth seeing?

Finally, I have heard much about this "nightly snowfall" that happens at the end of the day. What is the best part of the park to see the snow from and when should I get there to get the best viewing?

Please be as specific as possible and provide the times and locations of all noteworthy activities. Pictures and/or maps are helpful too. Thanks! 8:)

YES, Disneyland is open on Christmas Day. It's a very popular day to visit.

Prices depend on which ticket you decide to purchase. Right now, a one-day park hopper, which allows you to "hop" between Disneyland and DCA (Disney's California Adventure), is $81US for kids 309 and $91US for ages 10 and up. Additional days are considerably less, so check out www.disneyland.com and click on the "tickets" link for prices for multi-day tickets.

As for food prices, eating inside the park can be rather pricey. I prefer eating at Carnation Cafe or Cafe Orleans if I am inside Disneyland. For special occasions, we like Blue Bayou, which has cajun-style food, but is pretty expensive. For any of these, call 1-714-781-DINE (3463) for reservations. Plaza Inn is a fun place to have a character breakfast, where the Disney characters are available for meet and greet. Carnation Cafe has entrees from $5-$10, Cafe Orleans around $10, and Blue Bayou $15-$25 (my wife LOVES the prime rib there).

Inside Disneyland, you will definitely want to see the Christmas Holiday Parade, which runs twice Daily. Also, put on your overcoat and stay for the Holiday fireworks. On weekends, you also have the Fantasmic show at Rivers of Americas. For rides, here are some popular rides:
Finding Nemo's Submarine Voyage
Indiana Jones Adventure
Space Mountain
Star Tours
Big Thunder Mountain
It's A Small World Holiday Edition
Haunted Mansion Holiday (only if you liked "Nightmare before Christmas"
(I would avoid Splash Mountain, because you can get very wet)

In California Adventure, you will want to see the Aladdin Show at the Hyperion Theater, the Pixar Pals Parade, and possibly the High School Musical "parade". The best rides here are:
Soarin' Over California
California Screamin' (fast roller coaster)
Hollywood Tower of Terror.

The park hours are generally 8AM to midnight for Disneyland, and 10 AM to 10 PM for DCA. This is the HIGH season, so they are open late.

Renting a condo is usually a good way to go, because you can cook meals if you want to, which is a big money saver. It really depends where the condo is. If you have a condo name or address, I can tell you about the neighborhood. Not every neighborhood in Anaheim is a good one.

You REALLY need to rent a car here. Sadly SoCal has terrible public transit, which is why everyone drives a car, and the freeway traffic is terrible. But 340+ days of sunshine per year makes up for a lot. I would rent a minivan.

Travel tips: Fortunately, this time of year has MUCH less traffic than normal, since a lot of people take this time of year off, or businesses close outright. However, places like Disneyland and Universal are very busy. So allow yourself time to arrive early, when parks open, to get the most out of it. This may mean some early rising, but it will be worth it in the end.

Most people want to visit "Hollywood", thinking it's quite glamorous. It might have been glam in the 20's and 30's, but it isn't that way any more. Other than seeing Grauman's Chinese Theater and the Walk of Fame, there's not a lot of reasons to go wandering around Hollywood. Universal Studios is very interesting, since you can see how many American shows are made.

There aren't many discounts out there, but you might want to check into www.citypass.com. You can get a pass which gives you 3 days at Disneyland, a day at Universal, a day at San Diego's Sea World, and a day at the San Diego Zoo. It's a very nice discount, compared to buying tickets seperately.

The closest airport with International flights is probably Ontario (ONT). It's much less known and less traveled than Los Angeles International (LAX), but it's a LOT faster than LAX, in terms of getting in and out, and getting to Anaheim.

Have fun!

Wow, that information is really helpful. Do you happen to know if there are any specific things going on because it's Christmas time?

They have the castle decorated with lights for Christmas. It looks amazing. There is also a giant Christmas tree at the front of Main Street.
The Haunted Mansion still has its Nightmare Before Christmas theme going, and the ride is very festive with the decorations.
It's a Small World is not my favorite ride, but I have to admit it looks cool in December

Step1

Go to Disneyland between November 21 to January 4. You'll find the parks (both California Adventure and Disneyland) all decorated for the holidays. They are lit up with Christmas lights at night, making the parks even more of a picturesque wonderland while enjoying the rides and attractions, dining and shopping.

Step2

Plan for a long day. During the Christmas season, the parks tend to open early and stay open late. The Disneyland park itself is open until around midnight often during the holiday season. To check the times that it will be open for your visit, check out the official website that is listed in th Resources section. A quick click on the "Plan" key will lead you to a calendar that has the theme park hours for the week.

Step3

Go to the California Adventure park first thing during your trip. The Disneyland park itself usually stays open later than California Adventure. By starting out here, you can get everything in before skipping over to Disneyland for some afternoon and night fun.

Step4

Go on the "It's A Small World" ride at night. Not only is the entire exterior all lit up with gorgeous Christmas lights and decorations, but the inside is completely decorated for Christmas, complete with Christmas greetings in different languages, hundreds of dolls to sing you Christmas carols and an entire Christmas "room" of the ride.

Step5

Walk down Main Street. The decorations are especially elegant here, and you will feel as though you are walking in a charmed older town that has a bit of magic to it.

Step6

Go shopping at the many shops that line Main Street and are located in every "land" of the kingdom. You can find something for everybody on your Christmas list, and you can even get everybody a special ornament from the huge selection in the parks at this time of year.

Step7

Consult the daily schedule at the gate for the special events schedule. Daily Christmas parades can be found throughout the parks. You should plan to be in place at least an hour before the parade starts if you want to get a good view. People get in place early.

Step8

Stay at one of Disneyland's hotels. They have holiday celebrations and meals that aren't offered elsewhere in the park, and it's a must if you are spending Christmas Day there.

Disneyland's normal hours of 10:00am to 8:00pm (9:00am to midnight on Saturdays and 9:00am to 9:00pm on Sundays) are extended during the busier times of the year. Sometimes (in the summer and at Christmas time) park hours are extended to as long as 8:00am to 1:00am!

Don't plan your day(s) at Disneyland like the D-Day invasion, but be familiar with the park layouts and the attractions that you and your group want to enjoy during your visit.

1.Since Disneyland has only two parks, versus the huge, multiple-park scope of WDW, most people don't plan as carefully to visit there as they might for the Florida complex.

2.If you've never been to Disneyland, though, you'll want to lay out a rough schedule so that you have an idea of how you will cover all of the major attractions that you'd like to see.

3. More important, though, I urge you to allow yourself the blessings of spontaneity.

4. If you're going to be in the park for only a day, you might want to plan a bit more carefully. For example, you might want to consider writing a list of attractions and restaurants that you really want to catch. Each person that is going on the trip should have input to the list. Since everyone's taste will vary, the list will include a wide variety of things.

5. Another important part of planning any day at Disneyland is deciding what restaurants you'll visit for your meals. Disneyland offers several wonderful full-service restaurants, and there are more over at the Hotels.

6.Park tickets are available from several sources and in many different combinations from tickets good for just one of the parks for a single day up to tickets good for five days of admission at either park. From there you can get an annual pass at one of several levels.

Guided Tours of Disneyland are also available-----------------------

Seeing the Disneyland Christmas Fantasy Parade would be on the top of my list.

I could tell you more about it, but I think the video here will show you better than anything I could say. You can also see the link under source for the official Disney holiday page, for more information.

If nothing else, besides the rides, food and shows, try to find the hidden Mickeys around the park.

You must venture into the subterranean under-city below the beloved theme park where the mole-people live and free the imprisoned Disney workers who have no rights and under penalty of lawsuit can never tell of the horrors and atrocities occurring in the Disney dungeons.

We went to Disneyland two years ago for Christmas! A few things to remember: lines will be a LOT smaller (bonus!), and since it tends to rain in December in California, you'll have the park to yourself somewhat. Make sure you see the parade; best place is sitting in front of the Lost and Found building right next to the park entrance. Also, be sure to watch the Small World display of lights, it's fantastic!
