For a while they've been straying from totally unsigned, unheard of artists.
From the source: Some came to Cook's defense. "There are plenty of contestants, winners and non-winners that have had careers in music, had representation and recorded music before 'AI,' " wrote one poster, adding that Cook's deal was seven years old: "If nothing ever happened with that, I would think she'd still be considered 'unsigned.' "

So yeah, basically it seems like unless someone has massive success they'll be eligible for American Idol as long as it helps them with ratings.

I'm going to guess that SHE does not have a contract, but her band does. Or... although she is touring, she's not under any contracts.

Ratings, pure and simple. With a signed artist like that, they can be guaranteed people will watch, whether they're fans, or to follow any controversy.

Additionally, it gets her some extra exposure, particularly if there's a contract.

"She got kicked off because she already has a recording contract!"
"Oh yeah? I need to check her out. What's her album called?"

I think you're right. It's a small bit of a marketing move engineered by the producers of the show. No doubt, they have an interest in her band.

Apparently (according to the Mahalo SERP and vote for the worst.com), she didn't make it past Hollywood Week.

Don't forget the show is first and foremost about promotion.
