What is the difference among clear phlegm, yellow phlegm, green phlegm, brown phlegm, and red phlegm?

How can you get rid of the green or yellow phlegm without taking an antiobiotic? Are there any over the counter medicines or natural remedies that get rid of these colorful phlegms that might mean you're sick?

The big difference between them is the color.

Also, I wouldn't recommend taking antibiotics for anything. Let your body adjust and it will handle the phlegm on its own. Give it a week. If it's not out of your system, then give kooky modern medicine a chance.

The color of the phlegm can sometime distiguish between a viral illness and bacterial pneumonia. In general, clear is ok, yellow and green may be something to worry about, but red, brown and white are concerning. If you have a pneumonia you need an antibiotic. OTC meds can treat the symptoms but will not get rid of the infection. I hope you feel better.

If you're feeling poorly and coughing up green or yellow sputum, particularly if you also feel short of breath, see your doctor, it's possible you may have a serious lung infection and would benefit from antibiotics.
