What can I do to relieve eyestrain / migraine pain.
Do you have any home remedies you can share. I am having such bad headaches lately and I think it is due to working on the computer. What can I do to relieve the pain?

Staring at the computer for long hours can cause headaches due to tension in the arms and neck, eyestrain or simply the concentration involved in the work you are performing. If you are certain that it is eyestrain, you may also want to see an eye doctor to check if you need glasses, or if you already have them to check if your prescription has changed. Taking a break and looking away from the computer can certainly help all three of the causes above. However, if it is muscle tension that is causing it, I would stand up and stretch your arms, shoulders and neck.
I understand that stopping what you are doing can be difficult, but it is ultimately worth it. If you have a problem remembering to quit and take a break, use a timer. I have a Kensington track ball. It came with software that I set so that every 30 min. it tells me that I have been working for 30 min. You don't have to use anything so fancy. :-) A cheap egg timer would work just as well.
As for once it starts/you start to feel tension in your face or around your eyes, I would use moist heat instead of ice. Ice/cold can reduce the inflammation, but the cause of the problem is likely tension and so the heat will help to relax the surrounding muscles. If you don't have a heating pad/portable heat pack, a towel soaked in water (as hot as you can stand it) will work in a pinch.
Good luck.

I normally have severe headaches but this is something so different. The pain is behind my eyes and seems to be worse towards the front of my forehead. That is why I think it is eyestrain. I just went to the eye doctor today and I ordered new glasses. Thanks so much for the good advice.

I know I do try to take breaks but once it starts hurting the breaks don't even help to relieve the throbbing.

Try taking a 15 minute break every hour (BEFORE your eyes start hurting). The best advice I got was the 10-10-10 rule. Every 10 minutes stare at something 10 feel away for at least 10 seconds.
Remember to move your eyes around too, and make sure your computer work space is well light (never work in the dark, and there should be no glare either)

Thanks for taking the time to help answer this person's question. However, keep in mind our best practices for health related questions:
1. State right up front if you're a medical professional.
2. State clearly where you got your information from (if it's based on personal experience you can say that!)
3. Use professional sources of health information
4. Be careful not to give medical advice you're not qualified to give (obvious I know).
Thanks again for helping!
all the best,
Jason
