Alexei Ramirez appeared to have a bright future when he hit .290 with 21 home runs his rookie year in 2008. Last year his numbers dropped to
.277 and 15 home runs. So far in 2010 he is really struggling, hitting just .214 with 2 home runs in 28 games. I notice he's a free swinger, not taking many walks at all, which is bound to hurt his average. He's going to be 29 at the end of this season, so he's really appraoching what many people consider the prime years of a players career. Is he a late bloomer ? Can he make the adjustments needed to become a more solid, potential star player?

Like a lot of players, it appears Alexei Ramirez may be going through the old sophomore jinx, at least to start the year. Then again it may be because of the Chicago White Sox letting so many of their good hitters leave during the winter months. Gone are Scott Posednick, Germane Dye, Jim Thome and others. That's a lot of firepower to lose for any team. When something like this happens it puts a lot of pressure on those remaining players, and it takes time to adjust to their replacements. Along with Ramirez, it appears Carlos Quentin and AJ Pierzynski are also struggling big time. Sometimes good hitting is like a disease; one player gets it, then everyone catches it and the team takes off. In Alexei's case, this may be the problem. I would look for him to perk up as the season goes along. In the case of a veteran major leaguer, you can probably check his life-time stats and expect by the end of the year he will be pretty close to them. In Ramirez case, there really isn't a history. Over in Detroit, rookie phenom pitcher Rick Porcello has gotten off to a terrible start, but has been showing signs of perking up. Today he tossed 7 shutout innings against the Yankees, while picking up his 3rd victory, 2 - 0.
