The martini used to be the most popular and famous and it still is very much so. However, I don't think it should be counted any more because it has split into a whole family of different cocktails that don't have much to do with each other.
The margarita is very famous and may be currently the most popular, with a huge number of Mexican style restaurants serving it. However, I'm not sure that it is famous world wide, and its popularity is relatively recent.
I would say that the Bloody Mary may be the world's most famous and popular cocktail. It was invented by an American in Europe back at the start of the cocktail era. It has been famous and popular in Europe and America ever since.
However, another contender would be the Gin and Tonic. It's simple, has been around since the beginning of cocktails, and is enjoyed world wide.

I think the martini is probably STILL the most famous...even my 85-year-old grandmother drinks at least one a day.

There is no way that barmeister list is legitimate. Most of those are totally new or made up coctails with no fame or popularity. Those must just be somebodies favorites, or one's submitted by site members.

The Martini - popular due to the fact that it's it's basically 2 1/2 to 3 ounces of gun or vodka with a Vermouth lining and an olive. Any idiot can make one and you don't look like a degenerate when you killed 3 of them for lunch - you look like one of the guys from Mad Men. James Bond didn't hurt this drink's rep either. I actually think you should stir not shake though - doesn't water down as much.

Dry Martini, shaken not stirred. The choice of James Bond's for over fifty years. Ingredients are three measures gin, half a measure dry martini, ice to strain it all over and an olive.
