If it's a crucial trip, I spend about 30minutes the night before looking at alternative flights. If your flight is delayed or canceled, that is exactly what the airlines will do. Being prepared and knowing the alternate flight paths allows you to A) Warn whomever you are meeting on the other end when your alternate flights may be coming in and B) Double-Check the flight attendant's work, in case you know of a flight they don't, or they just miss in the chaos. I've found much better results when I've said, I see that my current flight XXXXX is canceled, I'd like to be moved to flight XXXXX. Cheers!

As for the rest, you should be pretty much prepared. You know how to handle the cold and you'll likely be inside while you wait for your planes, so just make sure to bring something to pass the time for the delays! :) A book, handheld gaming system or a card game would definitely give you a hand at passing time. Just remember, if you wander off they are not liable for your seat. Make sure you keep within earshot of the boarding area as always.

I'd also recommend keeping your iPhone handy - often the Airline's website announces delays before the gate agent does! Be the first to switch to a better flight.
Finally, watch out for weather in the rest of the flight grid - specifically Phoenix, Chicago, LA, etc. Just because it's clear skies in CA doesn't mean they'll be enough planes to go around.

Well, chances are everything will be delayed a bit. Give yourself a little extra time on top of the standard pre-arrival time you give yourself. This is because it seems when it snows that travel people go a bit slower. As for the rest, you should be pretty much prepared. Pray that Bruce Willis and none of his family are flying into or out of your chosen airport. If Mr Willis is spotted in the vicinity, pick up a handy stack of Insurance forms, check that the small print does not exclude terrorism, extortion by South Africans, and unauthorized redirection of planes, and fill them in asap. Your immediate family may well thank you in the long run!

Plane flights are like children - being proactive is always better. If I see bad weather coming, I usually reschedule my flight to avoid it. I'd rather spend the extra 12-18 hours at home / in my hotel, than in SFO. Of course, this is probably the most expensive route. I'd also recommend keeping your iPhone handy - often the Airline's website announces delays before the gate agent does! Be the first to switch to a better flight.
