I would concur with "paulatl's" answer that December seems to be an underrated time of year to visit the Hawaiian islands. The Hawaiians celebrate Christmas not only with the traditional holiday icons, but also with fireworks, which can be a treat for the younger ones. The weather is dryer during that time of year, so if you are wanting to view the many natural waterfalls along the famous road to Hana, you may be disappointed. The week between Christmas and New Year is one of our favorite times to visit, though accommodations might be a little more expensive due to that particular time window.

I visited Maui in December one year, and I loved it! Weather was warm but not oppressive, and the whales were migrating by--you could see them from Lahaina harbor. January/February should be good too.
