Sadly, Pamala, it sounds like "Dexter" had to move to California permanently due to rising hurricane insurance costs. Article linked to below announces the move, and I even found a recent Facebook thread talking about how folks wish they'd return to Miami.
Do you ever watch "Burn Notice?" It's 100% filmed in Miami -- the show's producers actually take pride in the fact. I don't think they'll be filming again for a few months since the show's third season episodes are just now being shown, but if you would be interested in keeping up with when they might be filming, I have a couple suggestions.
One is to check in with the On Location Vacations website. They have daily listings of where shows are filming. Here is the page for the Burn Notice tag: http://www.onlocationvacations.com/tag/burn-notice/ (and here's the Dexter page for the heck of it, too: http://www.onlocationvacations.com/tag/dexter/ )
And then maybe participate in the Burn Notice online community. You might be able to ask if anyone knows when they'll be filming next on the community forum here: http://forums.usanetwork.com/index.php?showforum=71
Sorry about Dexter being strictly California-based these days, but I have heard awesome things about Burn Notice...I also included interviews below with co-star Bruce Campbell and the woman who picks the locations for the show... both talk about how great it is to film in Miami if you're interested...
Happy belated birthday!!

I want to know the next time & where they are filming a DEXTER episode in Miami? we would love to see it!
My husband and I live near Miami & are big Dexter fans. I have a rare form of Leukemia & my days are numbered (I turned 51 01/09). My husband frequently drives me to the Sylvester Cancer Center in Miami & we wanted to see them film for a short period of time, if possible. I am unable to sit for long periods, due to the cancer, but I have always been a big Michael C. Hall fan. If possible, we were wanting to have a glimpse of them filming. Although I am a big fan, I am not requesting to meet any cast members, I just wanted my husband to drive me by were they are filming, if possible. We read that due to the weather here, they actually did most filming in California, which would be impossible for me to travel to now. Thank you for allowing me to make my question more detailed! Pamala Phillips-Pembroke Pines, FL

• Thanks & God bless you for a rapid response!
I do enjoy BURN NOTICE & I have never missed an episode:)
DEXTER, however, is something else. The creative story-lines, writing & production is something I had always wanted to see:)
Thanks for your detailed research / information & for reminding me!
