According to Variety, the bang for the buck that studios get from showing ads for testosterone-laden flicks like G.I Joe and the Transformers sequel is enough to fork over the $3 mil -- or if the price tag is too steep then it's apparently worth it to pair up with other companies like energy water company SoBe and tie in movie scenes or characters with SoBe in the ad somehow so they can share in the cost of the ad.
If it's a chick flick or even a movie that is kind of on the fence in terms of appealing to a largely male audience, then yeah, my guess is that the studios would hold off this year when they may have gone ahead in the past. Plus, this is the first year studios can run ads during the Oscars, so for more plot-driven films they would probably do better to save money and bypass the Super Bowl in favor of the Academy Awards telecast.
In the end it probably depends on the film, I'm thinkin'...
