Its true that Heath Ledger as the Joker takes his cake and eats it too. What really came through in his acting, were the subtle facial expressions and body language, more than the dialogs. His tongue-clicks, hair flicks and that robot-like walk in the scene where he blows up the hospital were amazing.
But what will become a quintessential cinematic image, shown at every major awards show and TV program will be the way the Joker applauds Gordon on becoming commissioner, from inside his cell... Ledger was truly a genius in this tailor-made role! He has my vote, and Im pretty sure, he has the Academy's as well.

The movie is dominated by the Joker so I will give him as my answer. Health Ledger deserves an Oscar.

If you asked for my favorite "actor," then I would say Heath Ledger. Since you asked for my favorite "character, " then I will say Harvey Dent/Two-Face played by Aaron Eckhart). We have Batman representing good and The Joker representing evil. Dent/Two-Face is a metaphor for good vs evil -- or more accurately, the metamorphosis of good into evil. He starts out as the good District Attorney and slowly turns evil at the hands of The Joker.
Dent's physical and psychological transformation personifies the movie's progression into despair.

Agreed, the Joker as played by Ledger is the most refreshingly crazy (for lack of a better term) supervillain I've seen on film in a long time.
