At 1771 St. Lucia was still divided between the English and the French. The British stationed their troops at Barbados while the French stationed their troops at Martinique. During the later parts of 17th century there had been many battles fought on this island and by 1771 the British had most of St. Lucia and access to its vital sugarcane trade. And seven years later, (in 1778) the famous battle of St. Lucia would take place between the French and the British as a part of the American War of Independence.
