What is the quickest way to get 1k Twitter followers, and how do you get 'quality' Twitter followers?

(1) these might be quick and dirty... cheap ways of getting followers, but in the end... they get people to follow you quickly
(2) "quality" meaning that they follow you and are part of your "target market"
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

You get lots of followers quickly by searching for everyone who mentions some keyword you're interested in, and following them all. People still tend to reciprocate, because there hasn't been too much abuse of the system as yet. However, people unfollow quickly as well, so you'd better have something interesting to say. "Read my latest blog post" isn't what people follow people for.

I was going to make this exact comment. Yes, the best way to get followers that meet your definition of "quality" is to make yourself a presence on Twitter in your chosen area of expertise, which means following others who tend to talk about your favorite subject. Most people will reciprocate and, if you have interesting things to say about something you both find interesting, will stick around.

I think it's impossible. If you get a lot of Twitter followers quickly, they're not going to be what you call "quality" followers. I do have one suggestion, though:

Run a short-term (days or weeks) promotion or contest in which people have to respond in real time to your tweets. Give out real prizes. If the promotion or contest has something to do with the reason you want followers, then there's a chance you'll actually achieve your objective. To pull this off, you need to figure out how to promote it in advance, you have to make it interesting and compelling, and you need to run it long enough so that word of mouth builds.

Caveat: a plan like this may not be legal in all states.

Thanks Royleban, I think this definitely works, but the problem is I need to also beef up the "followers" in my other areas... to cross promote my Twitter. I will definitely do this when my blog becomes much more popular.

Do you know JohnChow from JohnChow.com or DarrenRowse from ProBlogger.com? Follow their success tactics. Have a fairly popular blog and promote the hell out of your Twitter profile in your blog. In other words - socialize with people on both your blog and Twitter profile.

This may not get you 1K followers, but at least put a link to your twitter page in your Mahalo profile. I went to check out your tweets, and was shocked to not see a link to it.

What you're asking isn't necessarily twitter specific. For the best results possible, you should widen your view to Internet traffic generation as a whole.

1,000 Twitter followers isn't hard, but "quality" twitter followers is. Think about what quality means to you and specifically, why you want followers or what action you want them to take. Knowing your niche and the what motivates the users in that niche is very important.

Generally, for twitter, consider the following things:

# Pick a memorable username (maybe the name of your company?)
# Spend 10 minutes making a custom background
# Check out Twellow - align yourself w/ ppl that interest you
# Speak your mind (be transparent!)
# Do get a TwitPic account (Uber Cool)
# Don’t become a Tweethead! - it’s okay to go offline from time to time.

With all this in mind, you may still not achieve your 1k goal. To do this, you may need to hire an outsource firm that specializes in this sort of thing. Rent-a-coder, Elance and the many other outsourcing sites will allow you to post your goal and pay when it is reached.

I sincerely hope that this helps you.

Very easy. Just follow these simple steps:

1. During the dot-com boom, become the "yearbook editor" of the Silicon Alley community.

2. Found a company that includes Engadget and give out information about Adsense earnings.

3. As Netscape GM, pay Digg and Flickr users to go to your new site, prompting a public debate with Kevin Rose.

4. Found a company called Mahalo.com.

5. Get into a public confrontation with Dave Winer at a TechCrunch20 conference.

6. Appear i(o)n The New Yorker, Wired, Charlie Rose, Forbes, The Center of the World, This Week in Tech (regular and controversial),

7. Stream live video of yourself regularly and announce it on Twitter.

8. Buy a Tesla Roadster.

Obvious: Get them to join through the usual other channels. Do advertisement, add a prize as already mentioned, do joint ventures with other bloggers / partners.

still it will boil down to one fact: do you have a follow-worthy twitter account or not? Unless not, people will unsubscribe as quickly as they may have been subscribing.

Do you have easy access on your blog to follow you on Twitter? Blog content is a great way to get followers, and quality blog content will guarantee quality followers - followers who want to hear what you have to say.

What does your twitter page look like? Do you have a clear photo? Do you have an clear bio? Are you updating your Tweets? If it's not an active page, people won't follow you. What do people see when they click on your page? Are you trying to sell something - that will turn people off right away.

Twitter is more about communication that sell. People follow people on Twitter. The sell is much more of an organic thing.

Finally, find those on Twitter with huge Follow and Following numbers. Follow them. You may find that these folks automatically follow anyone who is following them. Great way to drive up the numbers.

Try to get lead Twitterers like Robert Scoble post a tweet for you, and ask people to follow you. You will surely get a lot of followers quickly. Also, if you follow others, they will likely follow you.

I got a mention and a follow from Scoble without ever trying, solely on the basis of saying interesting things. I think people appreciated the fact I wasn't trying to pimp myself out.
