Anne of the Island

Anne of the Island is the third book in the Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

In Ann of the Island, Anne Shirley, the beloved redheaded girl of Green Gables is leaving for college In Nova Scotia. Having been forced to delay her college education te year before, due to unfortunate family matters. Ann instead decided to take up a teaching position in Avonlea on Prince Edward Island for the year, this part of Anne’s story is told in the second book Anne of Avonlea. With a years teaching completed and many wishing for her to stay, Anne finally is able to persue her education.

Ann of the Isalnd sees Anne leaving the Island and Marilla, to join two lifelong friends, Gilbert Blythe and Charlie Sloane who had left for college the prior year.

This is the third book in the continuation of the coming-of-age series of children's novels about Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl. It is set in Prince Edwards Island, Canada during the turn of the twentieth century.

Synopsis

Anne is now 18 and she is leaving Prince Edward Island and travels to Kingsport in Nova Scotia to attend Redmond College, with her lifelong friends Gilbert Blythe, and Charlie Sloane.

During Anne's four years at Redmond, she makes a new friend with Philippa Gordon along with Priscilla Grant, Stella Maynard. Anne continues in her unique way to win hearts and have adventures with her friend Prissy Grant and new found friend Philippa Gordon. Ever the consummate meddler and fixer Anne has challenges and success of both the heart and other personal relationships. Such is the character of Anne that she receives four proposals while at college. But Anne of course turns them all down, not ready for love or marriage. unsure of her own emotions.

Shortly into their third year Gilbert, who has been in love with her since the day they met, proposes to Anne, Anne turns him down saying that she would prefer to be just friends. Gilbert is heartbroken and decides to stay away from Anne while he finishes his studies.

Anne is surprised when she finds out that her best friend, Diana Barry has decided to get married to Fred Wright. That summer Anne is the bridesmaid and Gilbert is the best man, which is made awkward because Anne hears rumors that Gilbert is going out with Christina Stuart.

As always with Anne, situation ensues, but the wedding goes off without a hitch.

Back at College Anne meets the older, and rich, Roy Gardner who begins a courtship of her, and near the end of Anne's final year at Redmond, he proposes to her. Anne is unsure and almost accepts, but realises she does not want to spend the rest of her life with him. Her refusal upsets him and he accuses her of leading him on all this time.

Ann finally finishes College and returns to Avonlea, and finds out that Gilbert is very ill with Typhoid fever. Anne comes to realize, despite her pride and arrogance, that it is truly Gilbert that she has loved always and she spends the night in her window bay praying that she will not lose the man she truly loves.
