Lucy Maud Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables is a coming-of-age series of children's novels about Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl. It is set in Prince Edwards Island, Canada during the turn of the twentieth century.
The Cuthbert’s are aging and decide to send for an orphan boy to help on their Prince Edward Island farm, but when Mathew Cuthbert arrives at the train station, there is no orphan boy, and there is instead a very talkative red haired girl, named Anne. Mathew is confused, but seeing no other choice he takes Anne home to the farm. From this point on the book becomes a story that has, is and by all indications will continue to be a very popular, though classified as a children's novels, book for all ages.
Anne of Green Gables is the first book in the popular series of books about Anne, and the people of Prince Edward Island.
