  • The Birth of Anne Klein and Co.

Klein began her career as a sketcher working on Seventh Avenue in New York in 1938. Ten years later, she felt she had enough experience and started the company Junior Sophisticates.

In 1968, Anne Klein and Co. was founded and almost instantly became an industry leader as the goal of the company was to design and market sportswear separates that could be mixed and matched. The success of the company led to growth and Klein earned numerous awards and honors in the fashion industry.

Following her 1974 death, the company went through many years and difficult periods, marked with financial difficulties and ownership changes. Recently, the company was acquired by Jones Apparel Group with Mark Mendelson becoming president.

Mendelson said that Klein’s vision should steer the company. He added that the company’s purpose is to make wonderful clothing. As Mendelson has said the changes in design will be slow and purposeful, the collection is now being envisioned by designed Michael Smaldone.

But as it has been for years, many have said the sportswear of today has its basis in Anne Klein, who was a pioneer in what women’s sportswear should be.
