Annamarie Ausnes, a 55-year-old woman from Tacoma, Washington, diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease, found out that she would need a kidney transplant but it could take up to five years before she would receive one. Annamarie's husband and son both tested to see if they were matches for her but they weren't. In the meantime she would have to have undergo dialysis.
One day when making her regular trip to Starbucks, Barista, Sandie Andersen informed her that she had a kidney to spare. She then had herself tested to see if she was a match for Annamarie. She was.
During the surgery doctors decided to leave her two diseased kidneys in place and add a third.
Annamarie and Sandie both appeared on Today on April 2, 2008, discussing Annamarie's and Sandie's journey that they took together.
Annamarie was expected to make a 100% recovery.
