On September 7, 2007, the New York Daily News reported that St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel received a 12 month supply of human growth hormone in 2004. The report came after Ankiel had made a triumphant return to the majors following Tommy John surgery in 2003.

Pitcher Turned Slugger
Ankiel began his major league career as a pitcher, but he was forced to retire from pitching after undergoing ligament replacement surgery in 2003. Ankiel reinvented himself as a power-hitting outfielder and slugged 32 home runs in Triple-A before rejoining the Cardinals on August 10, 2007.
