  • Hereditary Angioedema (HAE)

A rare form of angioedema, HAE (aka Quincke's disease) can cause sudden and rapid swelling of the airway, genitals, digestive tract or limbs. There is generally no itching associated with HAE. It is caused by an inherited deficiency in or a defective form of a C1 inhibitor blood protein, which plays a role in regulating how the immune system functions. Up to 22% of people diagnosed with this condition die due to breathing problems.MedlinePlus: Hereditary Angioedema eMedicine: Pathophysiology Mayo Clinic: Hives and Angioedema
  • Acquired Angioedema (AAE)

AAE is similar to HAE, in that the cause is associated with low levels of C-1 or a malfunctioning version of the protein. Some forms of the disease have been associated with lymphomas and leukemias.eMedicine: Pathophysiology
  • Allergic Angioedema

Angioedema can be caused by an allergic reaction to drugs, food, insect bites, animals and substances like latex. Allergic Angioedema is usually accompanied by hives.Mayo Clinic: Causes eMedicine: Pathophysiology
  • Medication Induced Angioedema

Certain medications, including ACE inhibitors, can cause angioedema. Although only about 0.1-0.2% of people taking ACE Inhibitors develop the problem, it is a serious complication, with an 11% mortality rate.
  • Symptoms

The symptoms of angioedema will vary depending on the areas that are affected. The main symptoms can include swelling, itching and/or pain at the site of inflammation. Other considerations include difficulty breathing if the area is in the airways and cramping in the abdomen if the digestive system is involved.Mayo Clinic: Symptoms MedlinePlus: Symptoms
