This is Mahalo's Playoff Coverage page for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim clinched a playoff berth into the 2008 Major League Baseball post season on September 10, 2008. The Angels won the American League West Division Championship for the fourth time in five years.
Under skipper Mike Scioscia the Angels have enjoyed several playoff runs.
The Angels were the 2002 World Series champions when they defeated the San Francisco Giants in a memorable seven game series. But since then, the Angels have been eliminated by the Boston Red Sox in 2004, the Chicago White Sox in 2005 and the Red Sox again in 2007. All three teams went on to become the World Series Champions in Major League Baseball.
In an effort to reverse their fortunes in 2008, the Angels signed all-star outfielder Torii Hunter in the off-season and also traded shortstop Orlando Cabrera for starting pitcher Jon Garland. The team then traded the promising Casey Kotchman for star slugger Mark Teixeira at the trade deadline.
The Angels are hoping that this series of moves will help the team reach the World Series for only the second time in their franchise's history. It would be the first World Series appearance for the team under Angels owner Arte Moreno.
After the 2008 playoffs, the Angels have several key free agents such as Garret Anderson, Francisco Rodriguez, Juan Rivera, Jon Garland and Mark Teixeira.
It is unlikely that the team will be able to sign all their free agents in the off-season which adds to the importance of the 2008 playoff run for the franchise.MLB.com: Angels prepare for playoff scenarios
